Out of all the things I want, what I really really want right now would be new lenses for my DSLR. Why? Because few weeks ago, the autofocus on my 18-55 IS kit lens died.

Apart from the 2 lenses that I have previously lusted, I am currently also considering to buy better optics for my DSLR. And when it comes to better optics, prime lenses are the best options! ;) Here are a few that would make me lose a whole lot of cash but gain a whole lot of happy points…

Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM

14mm: wide-angle

14mm: wide-angle

I love playing with wide angle, especially during my Euro-trip, where cathedrals and great buildings are captured in their awesomeness. Also for group shots with little space to move around! Approximate price tag: US$2100.

Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM

35mm: standard prime

35mm: standard prime

This will be the lens I need for normal every day portrait. Without having to move away too much from the person, I can take great photos fast & effective. Approximate price tag: US$1400.

Canon EF 85mm f1.2L II USM

85mm: fast portrait

85mm: fast portrait

Of course, the f/1.8 version is much cheaper and as reliable, but hey, I want things fast! ;) Afterall, I’ve tasted 50mm f/1.8 and I wouldn’t mind having a faster lens! Approximate price tag: US$1800.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro

100mm: telephoto

100mm: telephoto

For more than just close ups. This will be fun. Not necessarily necessary, but hey, this is lusting time! ;) Approximate price tag: US$1000.

My faithful 450D... Do I want more?

My decision to buy lenses will depend not only cash, but also on the very fact of purpose… Am I really going to pursue photography? Another decision making headache: the lenses I choose will also depend on whether I am getting a full-frame DSLR, such as the 5D MkII or the soon-to-be-available 1D MkIV.

Lucky for me, lack of money means lack of choices. Means, as for now, I’d just have to sit back and drool over the lenses on my computer screen!

After 1 year with my Canon 450D, here’s my lens lust

I can’t believe that I have started my blog for almost a month, and yet I have not yet shown any sign of lens lust. But here it comes. For those who haven’t seen me with my DSLR, I own a Canon 450D, with 18-55 IS kit and nifty 50 f1.8 lens. I bought my camera end of June last year and have never regretted a single moment of it.

My 450D has been through a lot with me – from being at the edge of the rocks to standing tall in the middle of the sea, from taking vanity self portraits at home to snapping photos of random people in Europe, from capturing beautiful sceneries around the world to loyally following me to every event I go to. I love my DSLR, so of course it is only normal that I would like to splurge on it. Thus, lens lust.

Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8 L USM
I love taking portraits indoor and outdoor. For outdoor, I believe what I have is quite sufficient for now. But when it comes to taking indoor low-light photographs, I can only rely on my prime 50mm f1.8 lens, which is fast alright, but does not always have the right zoom length that I require. So what I need is simply this beauty…

Lens Lust #1: Canon EF 24-70 f2.8 L USM

Lust #1: Canon EF 24-70 f2.8 L USM

It might look exactly the same as other lenses, but quality matters!

At the beginning of my DSLR adventure, I find it more than enough to have the kit lens and my nifty fifty. Either that, or I started having unnecessary lens lust just because I know there are better out there. But in the last few months, after realising what type of photography I love most, I slowly learn what are the limitations of my current lenses and what I need to buy next. And what I need is, I need a telephoto zoom. The issue here is that the one that I want is a bit pricey, and a bit on the big side. By a bit, I mean quite a lot. So I’m not sure if (a) my tiny 450D can support it without being wobbly, and (b) I can support it since I’m not that strong or big of a person. Tough choices. But yes, “thinking” aside, here’s my lens lust:

Lens Lust #2: Canon EF 70-200 f2.8 L IS USM

Lust #2: Canon EF 70-200 f2.8 L IS USM

It's so huge that it looks (and probably is) bigger than the DSLR itself!

Now, I need either (a) huge lottery win, (b) sugar daddy, or (c) a nice friend/stranger to buy these for me *wink wink*.
